Morphology

vertebral = vertebra (semi-transparent) = vertebr + al

The adjective is clearly built from the noun 'vertebra' plus the common adjective-forming suffix '-al', but the stem is slightly shortened in spelling.

Etymology

Vertebral comes from the Latin vertebra, a little 'joint', and from vertere which means 'to turn'. Think of the spine as a chain of small joints that let you bend and turn, which is why vertebral means 'relating to the bones of the spine'.
