- Specialized
- The discovery of a superstring could potentially revolutionize our understanding of the universe.
- superstring theory
Examples
-
Superstring theories, with their abundance of U(1) symmetries at the GUT energy scale, would provide a good opportunity for Holdom's mechanism to occur.
Academic text (1998) -
The superstring theory of everything, if discovered, would be yet another so-called law of the universe.
Academic text (2000) -
And so that's the biggest single nice thing about superstring theory is that these infinities go away.
-
M-theory unifies all consistent versions of superstring theory.
-
No fully self-consistent theory has yet emerged, but many theorists are focusing their attention on superstring theories.
Academic text (2002) -
Right after the Big Bang, when temperatures were exceedingly high, superstring theories suggest that there should have been just one symmetric, superunified force.

In physics, a superstring is theorized to be a fundamental component of matter, vibrating in multiple dimensions.
-
Researchers propose that every particle is made up of tiny superstrings that exist in a multidimensional space.
Synonyms
A tiny imagined line-like particle used in some physics theories
A very small part of matter not made of smaller parts like an electron or quark

Etymology
Superstring comes from the parts super- and string: super- means 'above' or 'very' and string means 'a thin thread', like a guitar string. So a superstring is imagined as a very tiny, vibrating thread whose different vibrations make the many particles in the universe.
