Etymology
Solvation comes from the Latin root solv- meaning 'to loosen' or 'to free', the same root you see in solve and solution. So a helpful image is the solvent 'loosening' and wrapping around the solute particles to hold and stabilise them — that is why solvation means the solvent surrounding and interacting with the solute.
