Although the word is historically built from the combining forms 'nomo-' and '-graph', the first element is obscure for most learners and the technical device sense is not directly predictable from the parts.

Etymology

Nomograph comes from Greek parts nomo- meaning 'rule' or 'law' and -graph meaning 'to draw' or 'write', and the -graph part is the same as in photograph. So a nomograph is a drawn chart that shows a math rule and lets you read answers by aligning lines instead of doing long calculations.
