Etymology
Lanthanide comes from the element lanthanum, whose name comes from the Greek verb lanthanein meaning 'to lie hidden'. These fifteen metals are very similar and usually found together, so they were hard to separate and were thought of as 'hidden', which is why we call the group lanthanides.
