Etymology
Lactamase comes from lactam (with the root lact- meaning 'milk', seen in lactose) and the ending -ase meaning 'enzyme', like in amylase and lipase. So, lactamase is an enzyme that 'breaks down' lactam antibiotics such as penicillin, which is why it can make those drugs stop working.
