Morphology

forget-me-not = forget + me + not (opaque) = forget + me + not

Although transparently built from the phrase 'forget me not', the lexicalized plant name's meaning ('a small blue flower') cannot be derived from the literal phrase by an average learner.

Etymology

Forget-me-not comes from the simple phrase forget me not, meaning 'remember me'. One popular story says a knight, picking these small blue flowers, threw them to his love while shouting 'forget me not', and because of this the flower became a way to tell someone to remember you.
