Morphology

e-mail + message

The phrase is transparently composed from 'e-mail' (an electronic message) and 'message' (a communication), so a B1 learner who knows both words can readily infer it refers to a communication sent electronically. The composition follows standard noun-noun compounding and is cross-linguistically common, with no idiomatic shift or metaphorical extension.

Etymology

E-mail message comes from the old idea of 'mail' as a letter and e-mail meaning mail sent by computer, so imagine a letter travelling through wires. That's why a message called an e-mail message is a note you 'send by computer' or over the internet.
