Morphology

electronic + mail

The meaning is directly compositional: 'electronic' (using electronic technology) modifies 'mail' (messages), so a learner can infer it refers to messages sent electronically (i.e., email). This adjective+noun pattern is common cross-linguistically (e.g., Spanish 'correo electrónico'), so a B1 learner who knows both words will readily understand the MWE.

Etymology

Electronic mail comes from putting electronic (sent by electricity or computers) together with mail (letters or messages people send). The picture is like sending a letter, but it travels through wires or the Internet instead of by a postman, so it now means 'messages sent between computers'.
