Etymology
Crocus comes from the old Greek word krokos, which named the same plant that gives the spice 'saffron' from its tiny thread-like parts. So, crocus still brings to mind a small, bright spring flower with purple, yellow, or white petals and worth-noting thread-like bits used for 'saffron'.
