Morphology
The meaning 'a bound publication containing illustrated stories' is directly and transparently derived from combining 'comic' (an illustrated/story magazine) with 'book' (a published, bound set of pages). This is a literal, compositional construction that exists cross-linguistically, so a B1 learner who knows both constituents would readily infer the MWE's meaning.
Etymology
Comic book began when people took the funny newspaper comic strips and put them together in a small book to sell, so they were literally little 'funny picture stories' you could read at home. So, comic book now means 'a magazine or small book of comic-strip stories', often about heroes, humor, or adventure.
