Morphology

colectomy = colon (semi-transparent) = colon + ectomy

This is a regular medical formation meaning removal of the colon, but the specialised suffix and reduced combining form make the meaning only partly obvious.

Etymology

Colectomy combines colon, the large part of the intestine, and the Greek root -ectomy, meaning 'cutting out', just like in appendectomy or tonsillectomy. So, a colectomy is a surgery to 'cut out' part or all of the colon.
