A learner who knows 'chlorophyll' will grasp that the phrase refers to that pigment, and the trailing 'a' functions as a label indicating a specific type or variant, so they can infer it names a particular form. However, the exact status as the principal form in higher plants and the technical role of the letter label are domain-specific and not fully predictable from the constituents (especially if 'A' is interpreted as a different technical term), so the expression is only partially transparent.
Etymology
Chlorophyll a comes from Greek parts chloro ('green') and phyll ('leaf'), because it is the green substance in leaves that captures light. Scientists added the letter a to name this main type, so the name tells you it is the leaf green that helps plants absorb light.
