Etymology
Carboxylate comes from the part carboxyl (made from 'carbon' + 'oxygen') and the ending -ate, a common chemical ending that marks a change. So to carboxylate something is to give it a 'carboxyl' part — in other words, to add that small acid group to a molecule.
