calligraphy = calli + graph + y
The word is historically compositional ('beautiful' + 'writing'), but the classical elements are unlikely to be recognized and interpreted correctly by an average B1 learner.
Etymology
Calligraphy comes from the Greek parts kalli- meaning 'beautiful' and -graphy meaning 'writing', like the -graph in autograph and photograph. So calligraphy is 'beautiful writing', which is why it means the art of writing beautifully by hand.
