Etymology
Shangri-la was made up by the writer James Hilton for his 1933 novel 'Lost Horizon' as the name of a hidden valley in the Himalayas where people live long lives of peace and 'perfect happiness'. So today a Shangri-la means any 'paradise' or perfect, peaceful place someone dreams of.
