Etymology

Ginkgo comes from the Japanese word ginkyō, which comes from Chinese yín xìng and means 'silver apricot' because the tree's fruit looked like small shiny apricots. That's why the name Ginkgo now refers not only to the tree but also to the leaf extract people take as a supplement for memory and thinking.
