Etymology

The word zealot comes from the Greek root zēlos, which means 'zeal' or 'strong passion' and is the same root as English zeal and zealous. It was also the name of a Jewish group who fought hard for their beliefs, so a zealot today is someone with extreme passion who often does not change their mind.
