Morphology

tricuspid = cuspid + tri (transparent) = tri + cuspid + tri

Meaning is directly derived from 'tri-' (three) + 'cuspid' (pointed tooth/point), so 'having three points' is obvious to learners.

Etymology

The word tricuspid comes from the parts tri- ('three') and cusp ('point'), the same 'tri-' you see in triangle and the same cusp that means a sharp point. So a tricuspid tooth or heart valve has 'three points', which is why we call it that today.
