Morphology
thyroid = thyro + oid
Although composed of the technical combining form 'thyro-' and the suffix '-oid', these elements are not standalone common English words and do not help a typical B1 learner derive that the word names a gland.
Etymology
Thyroid comes from old Greek parts thyre- meaning 'shield' and -oid meaning 'like', so it literally means 'shield-shaped'. The gland at the front of the neck looks a little like a small shield, so that is why we call that gland the thyroid.
