Morphology

thrive + on

The verb 'thrive' (to succeed or develop well) combined with the prepositional sense of 'on' indicating source or cause yields a clear compositional meaning: to flourish because of something. This cause/source relation is a common and predictable pattern cross-linguistically, so a B1 learner who knows both constituents will readily infer the MWE meaning.

Etymology

Thrive on paints a picture of a plant that seems to thrive because it lives on a certain thing, like sunlight or even little care. So when we say someone 'thrives on' pressure or praise, we mean that the pressure or praise helps them 'grow' or 'get energy'.
