Subspecies comes from the prefix sub- meaning 'under' and species meaning 'kind' or 'type'. Think of sub- like in subway or submarine, where it means 'below' or 'under'. So a subspecies is a smaller group 'under' a species — a part of the same species that has its own differences, often because it lives in a different place.
