Etymology
The word rendering comes from Old French rendre and the Latin parts re- 'back' and dare 'to give', originally meaning 'to give'. Think of it as 'giving' a new coat to a wall — a smooth, protecting cover placed over the bricks. That's why rendering means a layer of plaster on a wall.
