Etymology
Protocol keeps the same basic idea in computing: it comes from the Greek protokollon, where proto- means 'first' and kolla means 'glue'. Think of prototype 'first model' to remember proto- means 'first', and so a computer or network protocol is the agreed set of rules devices follow to send and read data so they can understand each other.
