Etymology
Protocol comes from the Greek protokollon, made from proto- 'first' and kolla 'glue', because officials once glued the first page to the front of a file to show the original record. So protocol became the name for the official rules and formal steps people must follow in ceremonies, diplomacy, and other official situations.
