Etymology
Polytetrafluoroethylene breaks into parts: poly- 'many', tetra- 'four', fluoro- from 'fluorine' as in fluoride, and ethylene 'a small chemical piece'. So the name says it is a long plastic made of many ethylene parts with fluorine, and that is why it is non-stick and resists high heat.
