Morphology

passivate = passive (semi-transparent) = passiv + ate

Morphologically 'make passive' is clear, but the chemical sense relies on specialized technical usage of 'passive' (a metal forming an unreactive layer), which is not obvious to all learners.

Etymology

Passivate shares the root with passive, from Latin pass- meaning 'able to be acted on'. So to passivate metal is to make its surface 'passive' or less active, usually by giving it a thin protective layer.
