Built from specialized Greek medical combining forms ('osteo-' + '-penia') that are not recognizable to an average B1 learner, so the meaning is not transparently derivable.
Etymology
The word osteopenia comes from two Greek parts: osteo- meaning 'bone' and -penia meaning 'lack' or 'too little'. So osteopenia is 'not enough bone', which explains why it means lower bone density that is not yet full osteoporosis.
