Orgy originally named certain religious celebrations in ancient Greece: the Greek orgia were 'secret rites' of singing, dancing, drinking, and wild worship for some gods. Because these rites were loud and beyond normal control, the word later came to mean any kind of wild or uncontrolled activity.
