Etymology
Oafish is made from oaf and the ending -ish, where -ish means 'like'. Long ago oaf came from a word for an 'elf' or a child people believed an elf had left behind, and because those children were seen as awkward or ugly, oafish now means 'clumsy' or 'rude'.
