Etymology
Nonbreeding joins the little prefix non- meaning 'not' with breed meaning 'to have young', so it is like saying 'not breeding'; it's easy to remember if you think of a season when animals are not making babies. This is why nonbreeding describes animals or times when they are not reproducing or are outside the breeding period.
