Etymology
Nitrile for the rubber material is named after the chemical acrylonitrile, the main building block used to make that rubber, and acrylonitrile contains the same 'nitrogen' group. So, nitrile gloves and seals are called that because the nitrile chemical gives the rubber good protection against oils and many chemicals.
