Etymology
Silicone comes from the element silicon, whose name comes from an old Latin word for 'flint' or 'hard stone'. Chemists added a chemical ending to show a man-made material made from silicon parts, so silicone is a flexible, heat-resistant substance used for sealants, bakeware and medical devices.
