Etymology
Mycobacteria combines myco- meaning 'fungus', as in 'mushroom', and bacteria meaning 'tiny rods' or 'germs'. So the name shows these are rod-shaped germs that once looked like fungus, which helps explain why some of them cause diseases like tuberculosis and leprosy.
