Etymology
Mortifying comes from the verb mortify, which has the root mort- meaning 'death' or 'to make dead', the same root you see in mortal. A helpful way to remember it is this: to mortify someone once meant to 'kill' their pride, so something mortifying makes you feel as if your pride is dead and therefore very embarrassed.
