Etymology
Microfracture starts with micro- meaning 'small', as in microphone and microscope, and ends with fracture meaning 'break'. In the surgical procedure doctors make very small breaks or holes in the bone to help new cartilage grow, so the name describes the tiny breaks used to heal the joint.
