Etymology
Marinade comes from the French verb mariner, which meant 'to pickle', and from the Latin marinus meaning 'of the sea', the same root as marine. People long ago used salty sea water to keep food, so a marinade is a flavorful liquid you soak food in to add taste and help keep or soften it.
