Etymology
Lumpen comes from the German word Lumpen meaning 'rags' and was used in the phrase Lumpenproletariat for ragged people outside the working class. Because it was linked with low status and rough ways, lumpen came to mean crude, slow, or unintelligent behavior, so calling someone lumpen suggests dull or coarse thinking.
