Etymology
Hypomania comes from the Greek parts hypo- meaning 'under' or 'less than' and mania meaning 'madness' or 'very strong excitement', and you can see mania in the common word manic. So hypomania is literally a 'less than' mania, which is why it means a milder period of unusually high energy and mood.
