Morphology
There is a partial link between the constituents and the genre: 'heavy' can metaphorically signal intensity or loudness, and 'metal' is used as a label for a music style in many languages. However, the music sense of 'metal' and the compound meaning 'a loud, aggressive rock genre' cannot be fully predicted from the literal definitions of 'heavy' (weight) and 'metal' (element) without prior exposure, so the transparency is limited.
Etymology
Heavy metal comes from the way the music sounds: the guitars and drums are very loud and 'heavy', and the electric instruments can sound sharp and 'metallic'. That's why heavy metal now means 'loud, aggressive rock music'.
