Etymology
Glaucoma comes from the Greek word glaukōma, built on glaukos which meant 'blue-green', 'grey' or 'shining' and was used for eyes that looked pale or bright. So the disease was named glaucoma because doctors saw a change in the eye's colour or shine when the nerve was damaged.
