Etymology

The word ginkgo comes from the Chinese name yinxing ('silver apricot') and came into English from Japanese. A European writer once wrote the name as ginkgo, and that odd spelling stuck, so today ginkgo is the name for the old tree with fan-shaped leaves and yellow seeds.
