Etymology
Flak was originally the German military short word Flak, from Fliegerabwehrkanone, which means 'aircraft-defence cannon'. It named the anti-aircraft guns and the bursting shells that shot at planes, which is why Flak still means those shells and the fire aimed at aircraft.
