Etymology
Dashboard originally referred to a board placed in front of a horse cart to stop mud and water that 'dashed' up from the road, where 'dash' meant 'to splash' and 'board' is a plank. That's why the name later came to mean the panel in front of the driver that holds instruments and controls.
