Cretinous comes from the older word cretin, which was once used for people with a medical condition in mountain areas of Europe. One popular story says cretin comes from Christianus 'Christian' to remind people they were still human, and because that medical word became an insult, cretinous now means 'extremely foolish' or 'idiotic'.
