Imbecilic comes from the Latin imbecillus, meaning 'weak', made from in- 'not' and baculum 'staff' or walking stick. Over time it moved from 'physically weak' to 'mentally weak', so imbecilic now means 'extremely stupid' and is related to the English word imbecile.
