Morphology

The formation uses specialized combining forms ('cortico-' and '-sterone') familiar in biochemical nomenclature, so an average B1 learner knowing 'steroid' would still not reliably infer the specific meaning.
Etymology
Corticosterone comes from cortex ('bark' or 'outer layer') and steroid ('a type of hormone'). So, corticosterone is a hormone made in the outer layer of the adrenal gland that helps control water and salt in the body.
