Morphology
carnage = carnal (opaque) = carn + age
Although historically built from a root meaning 'flesh' plus '-age', the root 'carn-' is not a productive standalone English word for most learners, so the meaning 'mass killing' is not derivable from the parts.
Etymology
Carnage comes from the old root carn- meaning 'flesh', the same root you see in carnivore and the Spanish word 'carne' meaning 'meat'. So carnage brings to mind flesh after violent killing, and that is why it now means mass violent killing or terrible destruction.
