Morphology

autopilot = pilot (semi-transparent) = auto + pilot

The sense is metaphorically extended from the literal aviation device, so the connection to the parts is still clear but not fully literal.

Etymology

Autopilot can also mean doing things without thinking: auto- is 'self' and pilot is 'guide', giving the image of yourself being guided by itself. That's why saying you are on autopilot means you act automatically, often out of habit or tiredness.
