Morphologically related to 'antagonist' + '-ism', but the biochemical sense ('one substance inhibiting another') is a specialized extension that may not be obvious to general learners.

Etymology

Antagonism in science keeps the same idea: anti- 'against' plus agon 'struggle' describe one substance working 'against' another and preventing it from working well. So in biochemistry antagonism means one chemical opposes or blocks the action of another.
